Pappas played better than score reflects
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Deane Pappas, 42, is playing in his first U.S. Open. The experience was a bit overwhelming for the Australian journeyman as he shot a 10-over 81, but if you listened to Pappas talk, he really didn’t play that badly.
“I made four bogeys with a sand wedge in my hand today,” Pappas said. “I think a little lack of experience and not used to having to be so cautious with a sand wedge.”
Pappas was aggressive with a few putts, which compounded some poor swings. Patience also was a factor, but that’s something all U.S. Open competitors fight.
“If you miss it on the wrong side, you’ve got no chance of getting it up-and-down. So, just a little impatient, I guess,” Pappas said.
