PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – I don’t know if 40 is the new 30, but based on the leaderboard at 4:45 p.m. Pacific time, I have a feeling that someone 40 is going to win this U.S. Open.

Ernie Els is 40. He’s two shots off the lead.

Phil Mickelson is 40. He’s two shots off the lead.

Until a kid hoists a big trophy or two, let’s hold off on all that changing-of-the-guard talk.
