D-II Florida Southern wins USF Invitational
Division II Florida Southern won its first team title of the season Sunday at the USF Invitational over a field largely comprised of D-I teams.
The Mocs posted 12-under 852 at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla., to top Middle Tennessee State, No. 31 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, by five shots. No. 28 North Florida, winners of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational on March 2, was third at 860. South Alabama was fourth.
Golfweek does not rank Division II teams.
It was the first victory for Florida Southern, one of two Division II teams in the 23-team field, since the 2008 Coker College Invitational. The Mocs lost in a playoff for the team title at last year’s USF Invitational.
Mocs senior Matt Stauch posted rounds of 68-65-71 to finish at 12-under 204 and win the individual title, the first outright victory of his college career. He shared medalist honors at the USF Invitational last year.
Florida Southern junior Shelton Smith (211) tied for fourth and two-time first-team All-American Jude Eustaquio (215) tied for 17th.
The Mocs opened the spring season with a second-place showing at the Matlock Invitational.
Florida Southern has won 11 Division II national titles, yet failed last year to qualify for NCAA Division II Championship.
