Holmes squeaks into CA Championship field

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – J.B. Holmes has played in only five WGC events since turning pro in 2006, and just once at Doral. With the wheels coming off over his last three holes at the Honda Classic – a double-bogey–bogey–bogey finish – Holmes barely snuck into the field at the CA Championship at Doral next week.

“If I played that scenario a thousand times, I don’t think I would do it again,” Holmes said of his finish.

Coming into the week, the long-hitting Holmes was 11th in the FedEx Cup standings and needed to move up into the top 10 for an invitation to Doral. That looked likely when he shot a 66 on Saturday to move from 29th to eighth.

Holmes hung on to the last spot by three Fed Ex Cup points, tying with Bill Haas at 432.

“I’m getting in Doral,” Holmes said of the only good news he received today. “That was my goal at the beginning of the week. I’m trying to get in the top 50 in the world, get into Doral and get into the Masters.”

Had he not qualified for the CA Championship, Holmes said he would not have played in the opposite field event in Puerto Rico.
