Sunday, March 14, 2010
Auburn won its second consecutive tournament Sunday, posting an even-par 288 in the final round to beat a strong early-season field at the Tiger/Wave Classic.
Junior Cydney Clanton, the top-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished third to carry the third-ranked Tigers to victory at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, former home of the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic. Last week, Auburn won its own event, the Auburn Invitational.
After posting four top-5 finishes in as many starts last fall, Auburn needed a strong final-round finish to secure the team title Sunday. The Tigers finished at 25-over 889, seven shots ahead of No. 30 TCU (896). No. 8 Alabama finished third at 897 and host LSU was fourth at 901.
Sixteen teams in the 23-team field were ranked in Golfweek’s top 45.
LSU junior Megan McChrystal, No. 38 in Golfweek’s rankings, made a 20-foot birdie putt on her final hole to shoot 3-under 69 and win the individual medal by a shot over Virginia’s Calle Nielson. McChrystal finished at 3-under 213. It was the third victory of her college career.
Auburn was led by Clanton, who shot rounds of 73-71-71 to finish third at 1-under 215, and teammate Candace Schepperle, No. 40 in Golfweek’s rankings, who made seven birdies in a final-round 67 to place fourth at 3-over 219.
Auburn will look to improve upon its third-place team ranking at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga., to be played March 26-28.
