Freshman Mikey Moyers posted a career-best finish to lead Virginia Tech to its first win of the season Sunday at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.

The Hokies, No. 52 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, overcame a two-stroke deficit entering the final round at Pinehurst (N.C.) No. 8 to overtake Penn State and capture a team title in their second start this spring. Virginia Tech finished at 12-over 876, four strokes better than Old Dominion (880). Penn State and UNC-Greensboro tied for third at 887.

UNC-Greensboro freshman Robert Hoadley, the 381st-ranked player in Golfweek’s rankings, won medalist honors after posting 3-under 213. Hoadley, from nearby Southern Pines, N.C., shot 71 in the final round to beat Moyers (73) by one stroke. It was Moyers’ second top-20 finish this spring, and his best-ever showing at a collegiate event. (He had a T-5 last October.)

Old Dominion’s Eric Onesi carded the low round of the tournament – 5-under 67 – to jump into a three-way tie for third place, along with Radford’s Kyle Bailey (72) and Richmond’s Michael Shrader (71).

Virginia Tech finished second in its lone start this spring, the Puerto Rico Open Feb. 21-23. The Hokies’ previous best finish was a fourth-place showing at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges in mid-October.

Virginia Tech will compete again Friday at the three-day Furman Intercollegiate in Greensville, S.C.
