Rookie diary: Contending in my 1st Futures event
Sunday, March 28, 2010
Well, I just got in from my last round at the Duramed Futures Tour event in Mexico and unfortunately I didn’t play very well today. I shot 1 over (74) and finished tied for ninth in my first Futures Tour event. While I am always pleased with a top-10 finish, I am disappointed that I didn’t play better today and keep my position in the top five.
This has been an amazing week. The resort that hosted the tournament, Paradise Village, has been so great! It is right on the beach, so when we got into town on Monday after our two crazy days of travel, we were able to relax. I played a full practice round Tuesday, then nine holes on Wednesday and Thursday. I was able to sneak in a lot of beach time at the beginning of the week and I think that put me in a good mindset starting the tournament.
Blackwelder’s Rookie Diary
Ever wonder what life is like for a LPGA rookie? Well, Mallory Blackwelder is here to tell you. Blackwelder, 22, will file a weekly diary on Golfweek.com to give you an insider’s view of life on the LPGA, LET and Duramed Futures Tour. Follow her on Twitter at twitter.com/MalBlackwelder.
In the first round, I played great. I made five birdies and an eagle to shoot 4 under. The second day of the tournament I didn’t quite get anything going but played consistently and shot 1 under with two birdies. That put me at 5 under for the tournament and I was tied for second place.
Going into the final round today, I was three shots out of lead and playing in the last group. I haven’t been in that position too often, especially as a professional, and I think I handled the pressure OK. I didn’t play great, but I didn’t blow up, so I’m looking at it as another learning experience to build off of. As I said before, a top-10 finish is always a good thing, but my expectations are very high for myself, so I’m not satisfied with that.
I’m really looking forward to getting home and back in the States next week. I’m going to take a few days off and relax when I get home, then get ready to tee it up again April 9-11 in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the next Futures Tour event.
