Australia’s Presidents Cup equalizer? Flies
Wednesday, March 31, 2010
In the 1990s, I sometimes wondered why I could never understand a word an Australian friend said. Then I covered the 1998 Presidents Cup in Melbourne and finally understood. There are so many flies buzzing around during the Down Under summer that it’s prudent to keep your mouth closed to keep flies out.
Hence, mumbling with pursed lips.
I was reminded of that revelation during the news conference Wednesday announcing Greg Norman and Fred Couples as returning Presidents Cup captains for the 2011 matches at Royal Melbourne.
“You get the Australia flies coming in their eyes and ears when they hit a shot,” said Norman, an Aussie native. “It will be very distracting. ... Freddie knows that the flies are. I’m sure a few of them have gone in his mouth when he walks down the fairway.”
