Junior Fantasy picks: Heather Farr Classic

The AJGA season kicks into high gear this week with four tournaments. Our Golfweek staffers make their picks for the 12th annual Winn Grips Heather Farr Classic, to be played April 1-4 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.:

DAN MIROCHA (0 points)

  • Trey Kaahanui. Home game for the Tempe resident. Kaahanui tied for fifth here last year and T-17 at the Ping Phoenix Junior, his only two top-20 finishes on the AJGA last season. The boy must like a home-cooked meal and sleeping in his own bed.
  • Rachel Morris. Scrappy girl from Carlsbad, Calif., had three AJGA victories last year, including the Ping Invitational. She tied for fourth at this event last year.

RYAN LAVNER (0 points)

  • Jeffrey Kang. So if this is one of the first full-field events of the season, why not use the Golfweek rankings as a guide? Kang is No. 9. He’s a USC commit. He shot 68 in the first round of the HP Boys in February, and although he shot 76-80 over the final 36 holes, let’s chalk that up to competitive rust. He finished 11th here last year. He’ll do better this time.
  • Jackie Chang. She’s off the radar – for now. Chang, ranked 47th in Golfweek’s rankings, missed the cut here last year, carding rounds of 75-85. But I also watched her shoot a flawless 6-under 66 at the Harder Hall Invitational in January, and this UNC commit is poised for a breakout season.

ERIC SODERSTROM (0 points)

  • Ben Itterman. The Oregon signee finished strong here last year to finish runner-up. He also finished 10th two years ago. I like that history, along with a decent finish at February's HP Boys (T-14).
  • Danielle Frasier. Similar formula for me on the girls' side. Class of 2010 signee (Stanford) that has a good history here. Frasier has finished T-4 and second at the Farr the last two years.

JULIE WILLIAMS (0 points)

  • Jeffrey Kang. In his last spring as a junior golfer, I predict this USC commit will do great things. He opened the HP Boys Carlton Woods with a 68, and I see more low scores coming.
  • Alison Lee. She's No. 4 in Golfweek's Junior Rankings, and she finished T-4 at this event last year, not to mention that she finished fourth at the 2009 Ping Invitational.

Scoring: Win (50 points), runner-up (30 points), top-5 (20 points), top-10 (10 points), top-20 (5 points). Zero points for anything outside the top 20. Bonus points when specified. (Only rule: You can’t pick the same player two consecutive weeks.)
