Loyola rallies for third straight MAAC title

Loyola staged a final-round rally to win its third straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship.
Loyola, No. 232 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, trailed Siena by 10 strokes entering the third round at Celebration Golf Course in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Greyhounds posted a tournament-best 295 to finish at 40-over 904. Siena (309) was second at 908.
Led by sophomore Ryan McCarthy’s closing 72, three other Greyhounds posted sub-76 scores. All five Loyola players finished in the top 20.
Sophomore Jay Mulieri tied for second at 8 over.
The tournament marked the ninth straight season in which Loyola has won an event.
Iona’s Doug Hoppe shot 8-over 224 to take the individual title. His brother, Michael, was the individual medalist the previous two years.
NCAA regional bids will be announced May 10 for play May 20-22 at six sites: Alpharetta, Ga.; Bryan, Texas; New Haven, Conn.; Notre Dame, Ind.; Santee, Calif.; and Bremerton, Wash.
The NCAA Championship is June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
