COLUMBUS, Ind. – When the Trojans walked off the 18th green Wednesday at Otter Creek Golf Course, they immediately dropped to the ground and gave USC coach Andrea Gaston 10 pushups (legit ones, not the girl kind).
Gaston said they play games during practice rounds to keep players focused. The 18th marked the first time the players’ had lost. Gaston already had done 40 pushups herself.
“I don’t come to this competition thinking we’re automatically in,” said Gaston, whose team is seeded second.
Gaston traditionally does a fine job getting her team amped for regional play. They won the tournament in 2006 (Central), ’07 (Central) and ’08 (West). The Trojans have won three times already this season and are led by the Jennifer Song, an unflappable sophomore who will turn professional later this summer at the U.S. Women’s Open.
Eight teams from each region advance to the NCAA Championship later this month. Regional play will be held May 6-8.
