Led by a dominant performance from junior Tim Madigan, New Mexico State defended its title Wednesday at the Western Athletic Conference Championship.

The Aggies, No. 120 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot a final-round 294 to beat Nevada by seven strokes at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev. San Jose State finished third at 860, and Idaho was fourth at 875.

Madigan, No. 185 in Golfweek’s rankings, matched the course record with an 8-under 64 in the opening round and cruised from there, posting rounds of 68-70 to finish at 14-under 202, 10 strokes ahead of San Jose State’s Matt Hubbard and Nevada’s Scott Smith.

New Mexico State put itself in position to win back-to-back conference titles in Round 2, when four Aggies shot under par on their way to a 14-under 274.
