Annie Brophy has spent a lot of time during the past two days talking with her parents about the importance of honesty. She’ll graduate next weekend from Notre Dame with degrees in marketing and sociology, and then she’ll enter the big, bright world of adulthood with one last lesson under her belt.

“It probably wasn’t my best idea,” Brophy said Monday morning of her decision to report fake scores during Saturday’s final round of the NCAA Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind. “I’m sorry for everything that happened.”

Brophy, 22, of Spokane, Wash., said she can’t remember when she came up with the idea of turning in inaccurate numbers to Golfstat.com, which posts scores in three-hole increments to the Web. However, Brophy insists she planned on turning in her actual score when the round ended. She never made it that far.

NCAA tournament officials pulled her off the course on the 14th hole and disqualified her for unsportsmanlike conduct. Brophy’s front-nine score of 6-under 30 gave the Irish hope to qualify for the NCAA Championship, which meant Florida State, Oregon and Kent State had to remain onsite in case of a playoff.

“I had no idea my individual score would mess so much with team scores,” she said.

Brophy “understood completely” why officials pulled her off the course. Nancy Cross, chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee, said dishonesty goes against the tournament’s code of conduct and that Brophy’s actions impacted the rest of the field.

“Not how I imagined my last round of senior golf,” Brophy said.
