Men’s regional selection day primer
Monday, May 10, 2010
It’s men’s regional selection day and the Magic Number falls at 70 . . . or 69. There were 12 conference winners that earned an AQ that would not have been ranked high enough to get into regional play. That put the number at 69. However, Purdue had less than a .500 winning percentage and becomes the lone team this year to get red lined. That is, of course, if you go by Golfstat’s rankings, where Purdue ended the regular season inside the number. Golfweek’s rankings has Purdue well outside at No. 77.
Two years ago, in the first year of the .500 Rule, four teams were left out of the postseason: Arizona, Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Minnesota. Last year Auburn missed out.
With this we can add one spot when looking at the Golfstat numbers and that would be 70. Looking at Golfweek that number would be 69.
Which teams are going to throw the NCAA Men’s Golf Committee a curve ball? There are several. Kansas State, New Orleans, Penn State, East Carolina, Washington State and Texas-Arlington are inside the number in one of the polls, but not the other. I would guess three of these six will get in.
