Rookie diary: Learning experience costly

Last week I traveled to Antalya, Turkey, for my second Ladies European Tour event of the season. The tournament hotel was the beautiful Susesi Resort right on the beach. The night we arrived, we took a look around and it was absolutely amazing! It would be a very nice place to come on vacation, but unfortunately I didn’t really have time to enjoy everything about it since I was busy with the tournament.

Because I came from San Antonio, we didn’t get here until Tuesday night local time. After more than 30 hours of travel from Texas, I was completely exhausted and feeling totally jet lagged in the practice round. Because this is only my third time playing overseas, and the first time with a short turn-around time, I still struggled getting used to the time difference.

After I got rested, however, I felt great and really felt like the golf course suited my game well. The course was extremely tight and you had to place the ball on the fairway and shape shots into the greens.

The first round, I got off to a great start and shot 2-under 71. I was tied for third place and feeling like this could be my week. Unfortunately, I had a rough start to the second round and let my temper get the best of me. Normally, I don’t even really show emotion on the course, but for some reason, in the second round, it just got to me and I lost a few shots because my thinking was clouded.

Now, after the tournament is over, I look back on the money breakdown and see how I can NEVER let myself do that again! I cost myself a lot of money and a good finish just by being stupid! This is just another learning experience of my rookie season. (Blackwelder shot 71-81-75 to tie for 33rd and earn 1,680 euros.)

Blackwelder’s Rookie Diary

Ever wonder what life is like for a LPGA rookie? Well, Mallory Blackwelder is here to tell you. Blackwelder, 22, will file a weekly diary on Golfweek.com to give you an insider’s view of life on the LPGA, LET and Duramed Futures Tour. Follow her on Twitter at twitter.com/MalBlackwelder.

On a better subject, I got to visit the ancient ruins of Aspendos, Turkey, where there was a coliseum that was built in 161 A.D. The LET TV crew and the LET photographer came and did a photo shoot with me, Kristie Smith and Caroline Masson, two other rookies.

The coliseum was absolutely unbelievable to see. It really looked like something out of the movie “Gladiator.” I was amazed at how well preserved the whole thing was. I am really glad I got to see it because this is the first fun sight-seeing I’ve gotten to do overseas. It really makes the trip more meaningful in the long run if you get to see more than just the course!

I will head to Munich next week (if the airport opens back up... volcanic ash cloud!) and play in another LET event and then head back to the States for U.S. Open qualifying, a few weeks off, and the Monday qualifier for the State Farm LPGA event.

Everyone have a good week!
