Discussion boards: Share your memories of Erica Blasberg

Irene Cho kissed her wristband every time she made a birdie during the first round of the Bell Micro LPGA Classic. During what has been one of the most emotional weeks of Cho’s young life, dealing with the mysterious death of good friend Erica Blasberg, she was able to focus long enough over the Crossings Course to shoot 3-under 69.

“I think she helped me out a little bit at the end,” Cho said. “I just kept my head up.”

Puma, Blasberg’s clothing sponsor, sent wristbands to players with Blasberg’s initials and a red heart. Wednesday night, the LPGA family gathered for a packed memorial service at the Magnolia Grove clubhouse. Jackie Gallagher-Smith sang “Amazing Grace,” and the tour chaplain delivered a moving message. Several players, including Cho, shared their memories of the 25-year-old Blasberg, who was found dead in her suburban Las Vegas home on Sunday. An investigation is ongoing.

Leta Lindley, like Blasberg a fellow Arizona alumna, was the first player to speak. She read a poem – “Miss Me But Let Me Go” – that was given to her when her father, Marvin, died when Lindley was 20. Lindley carries the poem with her on tour along with sympathy cards. Two weeks ago, her locker in Morelia, Mexico, was next to Blasberg’s. She couldn’t have known she’d need that poem at the next tour stop.

“I wanted to inspire our tour to make one more hello, give one more smile to someone who is walking by,” Lindley said. “Life is so fleeting.”

The LPGA put together a video montage of Blasberg’s career, set to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “Gone Too Soon.”

Lindley said players who hung out with Blasberg in Mexico commented on how refreshed she looked. The player who made only five cuts in 17 events last season seemed happy to be back on tour.

“If she was looking down, I just wanted her to know how much we loved her, and how much her LPGA family was going to miss her,” Lindley said.
