Murray wins junior event, earns N’wide invite

A few days after his most recent junior triumph, Grayson Murray will tee it up on the same course against guys a little more seasoned.
Murray, a high school sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., has earned an exemption into this week’s Nationwide Tour event by virtue of his victory at the Tarheel Golf Foundation’s Rex Hospital Junior Open. He shot a final-round 67 at TPC Wakefield Plantation, site of the Nationwide Tour’s Rex Hospital Open, to win by one stroke over Logan Harrell.
Murray, competing against some of the top-ranked juniors in the state, 11 of whom have already committed to Division I schools, needed a bold recovery on the 18th hole Sunday to claim the title. Leading by one heading to the par-5 finishing hole, Murray pulled his tee shot into the trees. With a creek looming on the left, and a tree obstructing his view, Murray played a remarkable hook out of the pine straw, around the tree and 90 yards short of the green. He saved par after a safe wedge shot, and Harrell’s birdie bid slid by the cup.
Murray, who has given a verbal commitment to Wake Forest, shot 69 in the first round at Lonnie Poole Golf Club at N.C. State University. He is No. 16 in Golfweek’s junior rankings.
