It comes down to three teams at Landfall

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The NCAA Women’s Championship gets under way Tuesday at the Country Club of Landfall. Twenty-four teams from around the country are here to try to win the championship . . . well, actually there are a bunch of teams here to play golf and only a few that will compete for the trophy.
I will be the first one to tell you that the women’s game is getting deeper and there is more balance than ever before. I have been saying this for several years. But while teams have more talent than ever before we have to be realistic when we talk about which school will take home the trophy.
There has never been a team from outside the elite programs that has won this championship. Someday a team ranked in the double digits will hoist the trophy on the 18th green. Someday. Maybe in the near future, but not this week.
There is the Big Three and then the next four.
Your national champion is going to come in the form of a Sun Devil, Trojan or Bruin. Sure, a Tiger, Blue Devil, Boilermaker or Wildcat will try to crash the threesome, but it’s highly unlikely – and even more unlikely with this event being played over 72 holes and not 54.
So, here we are at the Country Club of the Landfall where the NCAA Women’s Championship is about to start and the sequel to the Pac-10 Conference Championship is about to break out.
