Rookie diary: A memorable week in Munich

May 19, 2010

Last week I played the Ladies European Tour event in Munich, Germany. The UniCredit Ladies German Open presented by Audi was an unbelievably well-run tournament and the sponsors did a terrific job with the course setup and the display of everything.

When we got to Germany from Turkey, we knew the weather was going to be iffy all week. It turned out that the practice days were the best of the week and for the days of the tournament, it never got above the mid-50s! When I left home for my four-week stretch, the weather outlook didn’t look that bad, so I wasn’t exactly prepared for the colder weather. I only had one turtleneck and a few pullovers, so I lived in my rain suit for the week.

While we were there, the LET hosted a few events that showed us the local culture. One of these was a “Bavarian Night” at a local Beer Garden. Everyone was dressed up in outfits that you would see at Oktoberfest, and there were children there dressed up doing traditional dances. It was a really fun night to experience with my dad and a lot of the other players.

Blackwelder’s Rookie Diary

During some of our other off time last week, my dad and I went into Munich to do some shopping and sightseeing with Alison Walshe, Hannah Jun and Mollie Fankhauser. The architecture there was absolutely breathtaking! And the shopping was pretty good too! :)

After all of this fun stuff, the tournament started and unfortunately I didn’t play as well as I had hoped. I hit the ball pretty well but I just couldn’t get my putts to drop. I shot 3 over in the first round and knew I would probably need to shoot 1 or 2 under in the second round to make the cut. I gave myself plenty of opportunities to make birdies in the second round by hitting my approach shots to within 10 feet, but I only converted one, so I ended up shooting 1 over and missed the cut by two shots.

I am making a putter switch and working on my game this week to get prepared for my U.S. Open qualifier near Chicago, and then I will have a few weeks off to continue to practice and get some rest in.

I feel like I’ve been going non-stop since my season started and I think mentally I’m ready for a short break! All of the international travel has been difficult so I’m glad to be back in the States for about a month before I go back over and play in the LET event in Switzerland in mid-June.

Hope everyone has a great week!
