Party of the year at CC of Landfall

WILMINGTON, N.C. – What a great week in so many ways here at the Country Club of Landfall. The NCAA Women’s Championship is the finale to the women’s college golf season and the people at Landfall have made it quite an event.
Walking the course Thursday was unlike anything I had ever witnessed at a women’s championship. The people living on the course were watching Purdue move ahead of Southern California in their own backyards while turning the championship into their own social outing. There were numerous backyard tailgate parties that showcased school flags and signs on display to show the party people's favorite team.
I have not heard one negative word all week from a player, coach or fan. Not one word. Usually there is something. This week: nothing.
As for the actual play, I am glad to say that while attending the social event here at the Country Club of Landfall (wink, wink) that a tournament did break out.
I picked USC to win the title before play started. And when the Trojans increased their two-shot lead from the opening round to seven shots after Round 2, I said the event was over. I was wrong. Even though I think Southern Cal might find a way to wiggle its way back into the winner’s circle Friday (I can’t change my pick), I am happy that the many new fans to women’s college golf should be treated to a great show in the final round.
