Junior diary: School’s out, golf’s in for the summer

Hey y’all!

I am going to pat myself on the back because we got out of school Friday and I think I did pretty well on all of my finals. It has been a great few days out of school because it has finally warmed up and I have gotten in a lot of practice time. My mom and I are headed to Arizona for the AJGA’s Thunderbird International Junior on Wednesday. Neither of us has ever been to Arizona so it will be fun no matter what, but obviously I am going to try my best! We are flying and that means no car trouble!

I am very excited and I feel as if I have been playing well the last few days. My brother and dad left for a Mediterranean Cruise on Saturday and therefore my dad hasn’t gotten to help me practice. Mom thinks everything is always good – Good job, good shot, good effort, good girl, good day, etc. So she is not a good critic on how my shots look or helping me decide on what I need to work on for the day.

Junior diary

Emma Talley, 16, will file a diary each week this summer as she plays some of the premier junior events in the country.

Talley is a two-time Rolex Junior All-American and has four AJGA victories. In addition to her three wins in 2009, she posted a pair of runner-up finishes and advanced to the quarterfinals at the Polo Golf Junior Classic. She first broke 70 at the age of 11.

I saw my golf teacher on Saturday and he looked over my swing and gave me some tips for this upcoming tournament. We did find out an important swing thought that has really helped my tempo and the way I stroke my putts and hit shots. Last week my drives were a little crazy, so I worked on my drives a lot lately. But just like everyone says, “It is all between the ears,” and it was.

I also am a little worried about the weather in Arizona because the AJGA sent us this guide to tell everyone that we need to make sure that we drink a lot of water because it isn’t like it is here in Kentucky where when you get sweaty, you get thirsty. In Arizona, it’s a dry heat supposedly, which means that you don’t necessarily get thirsty and feel dehydrated, it just happens. Not only am I so excited to play in Arizona but also I am really excited just to get the summer started because it has been a long winter and I am ready for some tournament golf. Even though my summers aren’t like all my friends’ summers, they are still a blast!

I also want to congratulate my buddy, Patrick Rodgers, on committing to Stanford. I know that has got to be exciting and he will do very well in both academics and golf. To me that seems like a really hard decision to make because I have taken several unofficial visits the past few years and I like all of them. Therefore, it will be a really hard decision for me when it comes time to decide.

Anyway I hope everyone has a fantastic week and I will let y’all know how the tournament goes! Y’all come back now, ya here!
