Defending champion Purdue earned its first victory of the season Tuesday at the Windy City Collegiate Classic, beating Iowa State by seven shots at Northmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.

The Boilermakers, No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished with a three-round total of 24-over 876. Texas Tech finished third at 891, TCU came in at 901 and San Diego State was fifth at 906.

It was Purdue’s first team title since winning the NCAA Championship last May. The Boilermakers won four times last season.

Purdue senior Numa Gulyanamitta won medalist honors for the first time in her career, closing with a 1-under 70 Tuesday to edge TCU’s Brooke Beeler and Iowa State’s Prima Thammaraks by two shots. Gulyanamitta, No. 31 in Golfweek’s rankings, finished at 2-over 215, and was one of four Boilermakers – Thea Hoffmeister (T-6), Paula Reto (T-6) and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc (12) – who finished in the top 12.

Purdue began the fall season with a disappointing 10th-place finish at the NCAA Fall Preview, then came in second at the Mason Rudolph Championship. It is the Boilermakers’ third consecutive victory at the Windy City Collegiate.
