The PGA of America announced that Southworth Development will become title sponsor of the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and the 41 Section Championships conducted nationwide beginning in 2011.

The new deal, which runs through 2013, expands the PGA’s existing relationship with Southworth Development.

The privately-held, Newton, Mass.-based developer of resort and real estate communities, has been working with the PGA for several years on the development of PGA Village Cat Island in The Bahamas, which is scheduled for completion in 2012.

Recently, Southworth – whose properties include Machrihanish Dunes in Scotland – and the PGA also agreed to develop PGA Villages in select marketplaces within the U.S. Rowland Bates, Southworth’s executive vice president, said the company is evaluating existing properties to acquire and re-brand under the PGA Village name. An announcement could occur as early as the end of the year, with multiple properties potentially announced in the first quarter of 2011.

“The PGA of America is excited to partner with Southworth Development as it sponsors one of our most popular member events, the Senior PGA Professional National Championship,” said Jim Remy, PGA president. “Southworth’s expertise in the golf industry will bring added prestige to this national championship that has both extended and elevated the careers of many PGA professionals.” readers: We value your input and welcome your comments, but please be respectful in this forum.
