You can add the Texas-Arlington men’s golf program to the list of nearly two dozen college golf teams riding in style.

The Mavericks recently received their 2010 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van and took it on the road for the first time this past weekend – and the van is undefeated.

Head coach Jay Rees’ squad made the six-hour trip from Arlington, Texas, to Briggs Ranch in San Antonio to compete in the Lone Star Invitational. The Mavericks won the 12-team event by seven shots over Notre Dame. UT-Arlington hadn’t finished better than fifth in its previous four events.

The purchase of the van was made possible by a private group of supporters of the UTA golf program.

“We are very thankful,” said Rees, who is in his 12th season at helm. “The van gives the kids a sense of pride, it’s a great recruiting tool and allows us to stretch our budget.”

There might not be a trip on the schedule that does not include the luxury ride.

Texas-Arlington opens the spring season at the Battle at the Beach in Newport, Calif. And the van will be waiting on the Mavericks when they arrive at the John Wayne Airport.

Reese figures the program will save at least $1,000 – and probably much more – by having his assistant coach Stuart Powell drive the van to California to meet the team. Rees figures the cost for gas will be much less than the cost of airline baggage fees and save the team from renting a passenger van while at the tournament.

Texas-Arlington joins schools such as Auburn, Augusta State, Virgina, Vanderbilt, Florida State and Texas Tech that use a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van. Alabama recently made the purchase, as well. The van is valued between $100,000-$125,000.

Some of the features the UTA van includes are leather chairs with an embroidered logo, wireless internet, satellite radio and satellite television.
