Bertsch leads Jacksonville Open after Round 1

Shane Bertsch shot an opening 6-under 64 at TPC Sawgrass’ Valley Course to take the first-round lead at the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open.

Bertsch, who turned in a six-birdie, bogey-free opening round, leads Gavin Coles, Brendan Steele, Andrew Svoboda and Rob Oppenheim by one shot.

Nate Smith, No. 21 on the money list and Keegan Bradley, No. 11, are among a six-way tie for sixth at 4 under.

Jason Gore, who last week set a Nationwide Tour record for career wins, shot a 5-over 75 Thursday to leave himself in a tie for 131st.

North Florida Junior Sean Dale, who Monday-qualified for the event in Jacksonville, was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. Dale was ranked No. 11 in the Golfweek preaseason college rankings.
