NORTON, Mass. – For all those keeping track, Sean O’Hair is 19th on the Ryder Cup points list that the PGA of America is keeping for U.S. captain Corey Pavin.
On another list, Pavin has 14 names of players he is keeping an eye on for his four captain’s picks to be announced Sept. 7. O’Hair is on that list, as well.
The two lists may be the closest O’Hair comes to being on the team after finishing dead last at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
O’Hair, a favorite of some of the current eight players on the team for a captain’s pick, has had a bad run of late, missing the cut at Whistling Straits in the PGA Championship. While he finished T-31 at The Barclays last week, his 74-75 could not have impressed Captain Pavin.
“We didn’t talk about anything, to be honest with you,” O’Hair said of the conversation that he had with Pavin earlier this week in Boston. “We just were on the putting green shooting the bull for a little bit. We really didn’t talk about anything.”
Pavin made the trip to Boston to talk to as many of the 14 potential picks as possible. Each had their own reaction to the discussion, but in O’Hair’s case, it didn’t produce what seems to be required to make the team.
While not unfamiliar with cup play, O’Hair went 2-2-1 in last year’s President Cup at Harding Park. He has never tasted the pressure of a Ryder Cup, which has to be a negative with a team full of so many rookies.
“To be honest with you, there’s a lot of guys up there,” O’Hair said when asked if he felt he needed to win to make the team. “Even if I played well, I think he’s going to have a tough call to make. A lot of good guys with inexperience are up there and a lot of good guys with experience are up there. I’m sure he will make the right picks and I think it will be a variety of young and I guess veterans.”
