NORTON, Mass. – For the first time since the playoffs started four years ago, Padraig Harrington will bow out of the postseason after the second event, finishing below the top 70 in the FedEx Cup points list.

Undaunted by the result, Harrington was still holding out hope that he was going to play next week in Chicago after a second-round 68 moved him to even par for the tournament.  Missing the cut by one stroke, Harrington will return home to Ireland with no plans to play in the United States until December and Tiger’s event.

“I’m waiting to see what I do here,” Harrington said after his morning finish as the wind started to freshen. “I could still win the FedEx Cup. Well it’s true, if I get through here and a win next week and I win the last one. Put your money on it now.”

With a three-week break before the Ryder Cup, the Irishman is not sure how much he is going to play, but is sure he will play at least one time before the bi-annual event in Wales.

“As much as I’d like a break – and a break wouldn’t do me any harm – I still want to be competitive going into the Ryder Cup,” Harrington said when asked about his future plans.

“That means playing some current golf, and you can’t get the competition you want unless you’re on a golf course, tournament play, so I definitely will play.”

Harrington had a hard time adjusting to the afternoon stop and starts in the first round, which ultimately spelled his doom after shooting a 3-over 74 on Friday.

“I’ve done that three times this summer, three times this summer I’ve had a delay, pushed out late, and I’ve come out – the head wasn’t in it, I struggled,” Harrington said.

“At the Open I didn’t eat, this time I did eat. If I had the mindset I had today, yesterday we wouldn’t have had any problem. I was good and solid and right there.”
