NORTON, Mass. – The game within the game at the Deutsche Bank Championship is the race to get into the top 70 in order to make it to next week’s BMW Championship in Chicago. Two words come into play there: No cut.
Or better yet, guaranteed paycheck.
Among those players who started the week outside the top 70 bubble, these guys are looking good at TPC Boston:
- Andres Romeo (T-10, No. 100; projected to 67th)
- Tom Gillis (T-13, No. 92; projected to 68th)
- John Rollins (T-13, No. 79; projected to 59th)
- Vijay Singh (T-13, No. 86; projected to 65th)
- Steve Marino (T-18, No. 78; projected to 63rd)
Those who have played their way out of the top 70, at least thus far:
- David Toms (T-59, No. 60; projected to 79th)
- Charles Howell III (68th, No. 62; projected to 77th)
- Scott Verplank (WD, No. 54; projected to 72nd)
- Padraig Harrington (MC, No. 57; projected to 75th)
- Chris Couch (MC, No. 67; projected to 79th)
Aussie Matt Jones was the man who started the week on the bubble at No. 70. He is tied for 34th and is projected to jump to No. 66.
