1.) Peter Uihlein

photo

Peter Uihlein

School: Oklahoma State, junior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 7

The scoop: Uihlein’s creativity has helped him win a combined six college and amateur titles since the beginning of the 2009-10 season, including the U.S. Amateur and Sahalee Players. He won three big college titles last season (Ping/Golfweek Invitational, Gifford Collegiate and NCAA Southeast Regional). His shotmaking skills were on full display in the Amateur at Chambers Bay, a course that demanded exacting control over the trajectory and distance of shots. Uihlein, always good around the greens, also has improved his driving accuracy since his freshman year.

David Chung

2.) David Chung

School: Stanford, junior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 24

The scoop: Chung’s back-to-back victories at the Porter Cup and Western Amateur were an exhibit of his strong ballstriking. Chung works with Adam Schriber, who also teaches Anthony Kim. Chung’s putting has improved since he switched to a long putter last year.

Russell Henley

3.) Russell Henley

School: Georgia, senior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 1

The scoop: Henley’s ascension to the top of college golf has been quiet and steady. The Georgia senior progressed from a second-team All-American in 2008-09 to Golfweek’s Player of the Year last season, thanks to four victories, including the SEC Championship. He was a fan favorite at the U.S. Open, where he tied for 16th and shared low-amateur honors.

Scott Langley

4.) Scott Langley

School: Illinois, senior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 15

The scoop: After a pep talk from Illinois coach Mike Small, Langley went on an impressive run, winning the NCAA Championship and tying for low-amateur honors with Russell Henley at the U.S. Open. Small helped show Langley late last year how to handle the expectations that come with being a top player. That lesson should come in handy this season.

Kevin Tway

5.) Kevin Tway

School: Oklahoma State, senior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 13

The scoop: Tway rebounded from disappointment at the NCAA Championship – his three-putt on the first extra hole clinched the title for Augusta State – to have a strong summer, with a seven-shot victory at the Players Amateur and a runner-up at the Trans-Miss. Tway, winner of two NCAA regional titles, thrives on tough courses because he’s strong off the tee and has a good short game.

photo

Morgan Hoffmann

6.) Morgan Hoffmann

School: Oklahoma State, junior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 20

The scoop: Hoffmann’s quarterfinal appearance at the U.S. Amateur livened up a rather quiet amateur summer, but he fared well against the pros. He was tied for the first-round U.S. Open lead through 17 holes and finished in the top 10 at the Nationwide Tour’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational.

photo

Bud Cauley

7.) Bud Cauley

School: Alabama, junior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 5

The scoop: After toying with turning pro, Cauley decided to return to Alabama, where he will be expected to lead a young but talented team. He should be refreshed after a light amateur schedule.

photo

Blayne Barber

8.) Blayne Barber

School: Auburn, sophomore

2009-10 Golfweek rank: No rank

The scoop: Barber sat out last season after transferring from Central Florida, where he ranked No. 21 in 2008-09, but has kept his game sharp by playing in high-level amateur events (third at Jones Cup, third at Southern Amateur, fourth at Players Amateur, Sweet 16 at Western Amateur).

photo

Patrick Reed

9.) Patrick Reed

School: Augusta State, junior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 9

The scoop: Reed has been one of the most consistent performers in amateur golf during the past two years, especially in match play, thanks to a fiesty spirit and balanced golf swing.

photo

Jonathan Randolph

10.) Jonathan Randolph

School: Mississippi, senior

2009-10 Golfweek rank: 6

The scoop: Randolph is coming off an impressive spring season. In seven spring starts, he posted six top 3s, including two victories. He had three wins overall.
