Balicki’s best bets

Senior writer Ron Balicki, aka “Wrong Ron,” makes his selections for the upcoming men’s season:

Russell Henley

No. 1 team: Oklahoma State. With first-team All-American Peter Uihlein and second-teamers Morgan Hoffmann and Kevin Tway leading the way, the Cowboys are set for an outstanding season. With the NCAA finals set for OSU’s Karsten Creek Golf Club, the Cowboys will be primed to take the title that has eluded them the past two seasons thanks to the match-play format.

No. 1 player: Russell Henley. The Georgia senior finished No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings last season. After a solid summer there seems to be no signs of a letdown.

Keep an eye on: Florida State (team), Stanford junior David Chung (individual).

Sleepers: San Diego (team), Texas Christian junior Johan de Beer (individual).

Ringler’s ringers

Assistant editor Lance Ringler, Golfweek’s college golf guru, offers his picks for the upcoming women’s season:

Cydney Clanton

No. 1 team: Purdue. Normally you wouldn’t see me select the defending NCAA champs as the team to beat, but it’s hard to pick against the Boilermakers. They return all five players, and I see no reason why they won’t be at the top again throughout 2010-11.

No. 1 player: Auburn senior Cydney Clanton has been one of the best players in college golf for three seasons. That experience gives her the early jump in the Player of the Year race.

Keep an eye on: Duke (team), LSU senior Megan McChrystal (individual).

Sleepers: Louisville (team), Oregon senior Kendra Little (individual).
