MSU rolls to Fossum Invitational title
Sunday, September 12, 2010
Michigan State shot a final-round 9-over 297 Sunday to win the Fossum Invitational for the fourth consecutive year.
The Spartans, who finished the 2009-10 season No. 111 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, posted a two-round total of 15-over 591 at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., 14 shots ahead of Dayton. James Madison (608) finished third, Valparaiso (609) came in fourth and Detroit Mercy (610) was fifth.
The event was shortened to 36 holes because of inclement weather.
Michigan State sophomore James Ross defeated teammate Chris Mory, a junior, on the first playoff hole to win the individual title, the first of his career. Ross was No. 479 in Golfweek’s rankings last season.
Michigan State did not qualify for last year’s NCAAs after finishing seventh out of 11 teams at the Big Ten Championship.
