LSU picked up where it left off last year, rolling to victory Monday at the Gopher Invitational.

The Tigers, who won three events during the 2009-10 season, shot 1-under 287 at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata, Minn., to finish at 5-over 869 and top Kent State (296) by 11 shots. Arkansas (300) was third at 888 and Charlotte (302) was fourth at 890. Defending champ SMU was ninth.

The Tigers were ninth after an opening 13-over 301.

LSU won the Gopher Invitational in 2008. The Tigers did not compete in the event in 2009.

LSU had four players in the top 13, led by senior Clayton Rotz, who closed with seven birdies in a tournament-best 6-under 66 to vault from T-20 to a tie for third at 1-under 215. Seniors Ken Looper (77) and John Peterson (71) tied for seventh. Junior Sang Yi (79) tied for 13th.

Senior honorable mention All-American Andrew Loupe did not travel with the team.

LSU was ranked No. 15 in Golfweek’s preseason poll and finished the 2009-10 season No. 31 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

The Tigers finished fifth at the SEC Championship and NCAA Central Regional last season, before tying for 24th at the NCAA Championship.

Kent State senior John Hahn cruised to victory in the individual race, carding rounds of 68-67-71 for a 10-under 206 total. He was six shots clear of Arkansas’ Sebastian Cappelen (72). Hahn, who came into the season with a 72.35 scoring average – second only to Ben Curtis in the KSU record book – was named to Golfweek’s preseason third team.
