It had been at least four years since TaylorMade lost a driver count on the PGA Tour, but it happened at the 70-player BMW Championship when Titleist edged TaylorMade, 23-22, in the driver category.

Bolstered by 15 new 910 drivers in play, Titleist came out on top.

Still, it was a good week for TaylorMade, as Dustin Johnson won the BMW and Martin Kaymer ran away with the KLM Open on the PGA European Tour. Johnson and Kaymer are TaylorMade staff players; Johnson used an R9 (10.5 degree) and Kaymer had an R9 SuperTri (8.5 degree).

Diablo Octane driver nears debut: Meanwhile, U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell was singing the praises via Twitter of a Callaway driver recently unveiled for sales reps.

Called the Callaway Diablo Octane, the driver has not yet been introduced on professional tours. The newest member of the Diablo family, the club will be available in regular and tour versions.

The tour model is expected to have a slightly open face.

A trio of traditionalists: Who says that touring pros have abandoned higher-lofted fairway woods for hybrids?

Dustin Johnson played two TaylorMade R9 fairway woods (15 and 19 degree); Martin Kaymer had two TaylorMade fairway woods, an R9 3-wood (13 degree) and a Burner 5-wood (17.5 degree); and Ernie Els carried two Callaway X fairway woods (15 and 19 degree).

They carried no hybrids.

Short shots: Jim Furyk, who suddenly has become a putter switcher, abandoned his brief experiment with belly putting and putted conventionally at BMW with a Yes! Sophia. . . . In a world of X100 Dynamic Gold steel iron shafts (the past two PGA Tour winners, Charley Hoffman and Dustin Johnson, use X100), it is reassuring to see someone use a softer shaft. Luke Donald uses the softer S300 Dynamic Gold steel iron shafts.
