LSU authored a stirring rally on the back nine Sunday to capture the Mason Rudolph Championship. The Tigers, No. 21 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, got late birdies from Jacqueline Hedwall, Mary Michael Maggio and Megan McChrystal to post another school record and top defending champion Purdue by two shots at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

LSU shot 5-under 283 in the final round to finish at 21-under 843. Southern Cal and UCLA tied for third, at 851.

Nearly two weeks ago, LSU fell just short at the NCAA Fall Preview, losing to Alabama by two shots. In two fall tournaments, the Tigers have shot a combined 35 under par, with all six rounds under par.

“I believe these two tournaments have really shown the quality of play in women’s golf these days, and what our team is capable of doing,” LSU coach Karen Bahnsen said. “I am so proud of the girls for the way they just got in there and fought all weekend. They deserved to win this.”

The title wasn’t secure until Hedwall and Maggio birdied the 18th, and McChrystal birdied her last two holes. McChrystal tied for fourth individually.

Cal senior Mia Halbig shot a final-round 68 to win the individual race, her first career title. Halbig finished at 13-under 203 to set a team record and tie the previous tournament mark. Wake Forest’s Michelle Shin was second, at 206, and Auburn’s Cydney Clanton, No. 1 in Golfweek’s preseason rankings, was third.

“It’s amazing, unbelievable. I’m speechless,” Halbig said. “I really credit my putting. I made a bunch of really good putts in really big situations.”

Information from the LSU and California athletic departments was used in this report.
