Potential Euro team pairings at Ryder Cup
European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has been more open about possible pairings than counterpart Corey Pavin, but it’s not as if he was giving away state secrets.
The Molinari brothers. This pairing is a no-brainer for Montgomerie. Francesco and Edoardo won the World Cup last year, and obviously know each other better than any other twosome on the Euro team. Edoardo is even on record as saying they will not lose a match. Look for Montgomerie to send them out for both sessions on Friday, and then decide on using them on Saturday based on how they play.
Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. Another obvious pairing. They finished second to the Molinaris in the World Cup, both hail from Northern Ireland and are great friends. Monty wasn’t giving anything away when he said they would probably play together.
Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. A perfect four-ball and foursomes pairing since both are very steady players.
Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer. Another reliable possibility for Montgomerie in either format since Kaymer won’t be fazed by the occasion.
Martin Kaymer and Luke Donald. If Montgomerie wants the option of putting Westwood with one of the other rookies besides Kaymer, then Donald and Kaymer would make a good pairing in either four-ball or foursomes. They played together in today’s practice session.
Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher. They look like a likely pairing since both teed it up together in the World Cup for England.
Poulter and McDowell. They played once together at Valhalla and won. They took down the strong pairing of Kenny Perry and Jim Furyk in the second four-ball and Monty would be crazy not to throw them out together again at some point, depending, of course, on how well McDowell gels with McIlroy.
Padraig Harrington and Peter Hanson. Harrington is pretty much free to play with anyone on the European team, but look for him to perhaps chaperone Hanson around Celtic Manor.
Miguel Angel Jimenez and Hanson. If Harrington doesn’t take Hanson under his wing, then look for the experienced Jimenez to play with the Swede.
