Georgia Tech earns hat trick at ACCs
Sunday, April 24, 2011
Another Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, another title for Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets swept the top three individual spots and shot 16-under 272 in the final round April 24 to roll to an ACC-record 33-under 831 total and a 20-shot victory over runner-up Duke at Old North State Club in New London, N.C. It was Tech’s third consecutive ACC crown, fifth in the past six years and 13th overall. Clemson finished third, 30 shots behind the Yellow Jackets.
Seniors Paul Haley (70), Kyle Scott (68 and John-Tyler Griffin (66) finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the individual standings for the second consecutive event, matching their positions at last week’s Yellow Jacket Classic. Haley made a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win medalist honors by one shot over teammate Scott. Tech’s James White (68) tied for eighth, giving Tech four players in the top 10 for only the second time ever.
“That’s some of the best golf we’ve ever played. . . . I couldn’t be more thrilled for these guys and how they played this weekend,” said Tech head coach Bruce Heppler. “For those three seniors to finish 1-2-3 and graduate in 10 days, that’s as good as it gets.”
Information from the Georgia Tech athletic department was used in this report.
