North Florida to launch women's team in 2012
Friday, April 29, 2011
The University of North Florida will add a women’s golf team to its list of varsity sports beginning in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of women’s golf bumps the university’s varsity sports count to 18 teams, and also puts the Atlantic Sun Conference at full participation for its member institutions for the sport.
“We are excited about adding women’s golf into the family of Osprey sports,” said Lee Moon, North Florida's director of athletics. “We feel like women’s golf is a perfect fit for our athletic program at this time, especially with the success that our men’s golf program has enjoyed recently. Our location, the ability to play year round and our facilities give us an immediate advantage in not only attracting a strong coach but also in drawing top-notch golf prospects interested in competing at the highest level.”
A national search for a head coach is scheduled for this spring, and the following year will be used for recruiting, scheduling and player development.
North Florida’s men’s golf team is ranked No. 45 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings. The team has six top-5 finishes in 11 starts this season.
