Joey Garber, No. 12 in the Class of 2010, signed with Michigan.

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, Michigan sophomore Joey Garber walked into the office of first-year head coach Chris Whitten and informed him he was leaving the team. Garber expects to play for Georgia in the spring.

Garber, of Petoskey, Mich., finished last season at No. 220 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings and played in all 14 events for Michigan. His best finish was a tie for second at The Ridges and a T-4 at NCAA regionals.

“I enjoyed my first year at Michigan, but I need a change,” Garber said. “I need to find a place that fits my needs both academically and a place that can help me with my golf game.”

Garber said he will attend another college in the fall to boost his grades so that he can enroll at Georgia in the spring. Garber said he most likely will attend Piedmont College in Athens, Ga. If Garber passes those classes, then he expects to be part of Georgia’s roster in January.

Georgia coach Chris Haack declined to comment.
