Abby Newton of Katy, Texas, has given a verbal commitment to play college golf at Ole Miss.
Newton, who is ranked No. 34 in the 2012 class, had made unofficial visits to LSU, TCU, Texas Tech, Texas-San Antonio and Ole Miss. Newton also had been interested in Baylor, Colorado State, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and SMU.
“I chose Ole Miss because I love everything it has to offer with the campus, academics, athletic facilities and great coaches,” Newton said. “With Coach (Michele) Drinkard and Coach (Janelle) Howland guiding me, I feel I can improve my game and play successfully at the college level and beyond. Their approach to improving each girl’s game is very unique. With the new additions to the practice facilities, I feel the resources are very competitive to other schools and are close to campus, which is an added bonus. I really like the school spirit and traditions at Ole Miss, especially at the football games.”
Newton, who attends Cinco Ranch High School, recently qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Girls’ Junior, and recorded a third-place finish at the AJGA E-Z-GO Vaughn Taylor Championship.
