The next time Patrick Cantlay tees off for a tournament at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif. – a track on which he’s already won – the stakes will be considerably higher. Cantlay will make his fifth PGA Tour start of the year at the Frys.com Open at CordeValle after receiving a sponsor exemption, according to a statement released by the tournament.

Cantlay, a sophomore at UCLA who hails from Los Alamitos, Calif., earned the first of four collegiate victories in his freshman campaign at CordeValle during the Gifford Collegiate. He shot 67-69-71 for a 6-under 207 total on the par-71 layout.

Cantlay was named Freshman of the Year in 2011 and also won the Phil Mickelson Award. He is No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

“He is a great addition to our field,” Frys.com Open director Ian Knight said in a statement released Tuesday. The Frys.com Open, to be played Oct. 6-9, is the second event on the PGA Tour’s Fall Series.

Cantlay has finished in the top 25 in each of his four PGA Tour starts of 2011, including a tie for 21st at the U.S. Open that earned him low-amateur honors. Cantlay was T-9 at the RBC Canadian Open, T-20 at the AT&T National and T-24 at The Travelers Championship, where he set the course record with a 10-under 60 in the second round at TPC River Highlands.
