Zhang quits at Notre Dame, looks to transfer
Wednesday, August 24, 2011
Nicole Zhang returned to South Bend, Ind., this fall, but it won’t be business as usual for the Notre Dame sophomore.
The Calgary, Alberta, native decided to quit the Irish women’s team. She led Notre Dame with a 74.3 scoring average and finished 47th in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
“I am currently attending Notre Dame as a non-athlete and am considering transferring in 2012,” Zhang told Golfweek via email.
She didn't share more details on her plans.
Zhang, 19, won the Mary Fossum Invitational last fall in her collegiate debut with a 9-under 207. Last summer at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club, she was the first Irish player to compete in the U.S. Women’s Open.
Notre Dame won four tournaments in the 2010-11 season and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time in school history. The Irish were ranked 25th. With only five players on its roster, Notre Dame will struggle to match those results this season.
