Golfweek Fantasy Tip Sheet: Phoenix Open

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson figure to contend this week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

After a nail-biting finish at Torrey Pines, the PGA Tour rolls into Arizona this week for one of the most lively events on the schedule, the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Last year at TPC Scottsdale, Hunter Mahan finished at 16-under 268 to edge Rickie Fowler by a stroke. So, we ask: Who will prevail this year in the desert?

Rank Winner Wild Card Last Week
Babineau Rickie Fowler

He nearly won here last season, showed what he’s capable of doing at the Ryder Cup, and needs to notch that first victory sometime soon.

Bryce Molder

Tied for eighth at Phoenix last year and is a player really ready to come into his own, much the way good buddy Matt Kuchar did a year ago.

Winner: Tiger Woods (T-44); wild card: Davis Love III (MC)

Rude Phil Mickelson

Almost won last week and is back at some friendly confines. Has won twice there and challenged often.

Anthony Kim

Has slipped to 77th in Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, but he’s a big-time talent intent on a comeback. Showed some flashes in tying for sixth last week at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Winner: Charles Howell III (T-14); wild card: Charley Hoffman (MC).

Martin Dustin Johnson

This course is built for a long bomber. Johnson fits that mold perfectly. He’s coming off a T-3 at Torrey Pines.

Ryan Moore

Moore has a good record in the desert, having finished 14th and sixth in his past two appearances at TPC Scottsdale.

Winner: Bill Haas (T-9); wild card: Rickie Fowler (T-20).

McCabe Phil Mickelson

Last week’s hometown hero is this week’s hometown hero. (Yes, the left-hander is that popular, claimed by two towns.) Last week’s near winner is this week’s winner.

Gary Woodland

Annually, this tournament produces a surprise name in contention – Rickie Fowler in ’10, Camilo Villegas in ’06, Kevin Na in ’05 – who goes on to great things, so here’s a hunch the guy from Kansas is that player this time around. TPC Scottsdale embraces long hitters, and that fits beautifully with Woodland’s forte.

Winner: Dustin Johnson (T-3); wild card: Charles Howell III (T-14).

Miceli Dustin Johnson

Looked very solid in San Diego. When he’s in the field, you have to take a good look at him as a potential winner. He’s 12-1 odds in Las Vegas, just behind Mickelson’s 8-1.

Ryan Moore

I like how Fredrik Jacobson is playing, but Ryan Moore is my pick. Not sure I can pinpoint the reason, but in talking to him he is hungry for the early part of the season.

Winner: Dustin Johnson (T-3); wild card: Steve Marino (MC).

Ringler Phil Mickelson

Could have won last week, and will be in familiar surroundings this week at TPC Scottsdale. Mickelson is a two-time winner (1996, 2005) of this event and holds a share of the course record (60). Mickelson’s 2011 game plan may involve a little better strategy from a course-management standpoint, and that could add up to better results in the future.

Jhonattan Vegas

How can you not pick him? In his past two starts, Vegas won the Bob Hope Classic and then finished T-3 at Farmers Insurance Open. In 11 competitive rounds this year, Vegas has shot in the 70s only once - with the last 10 being in the 60s.

Winner: Ben Crane (T-14); wild card: Fredrik Jacobson (T-25).
