India rallies to win gold at Asian Junior

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – India recently won the Asian Juniors Golf Team Championship at the Damai Laut Golf & Country Club.

The Indian team, comprised of S. Chikkarangappa, Trishul Chinnappa, Saqib Ahmad and Tarundeep Chadha, was tied for second with South Korea, two strokes behind Thailand, after Round 2. But some superlative golf from Tarundeep with a par round on the final day helped India tie Thailand with a three-day cumulative score of 665. India won the gold medal because it had the higher final-round score. South Korea took the bronze.

Rattanon Wannasrichan of Thailand shot 218 to win the individual gold, edging Chikkarangappa by a stroke. Chikkarangappa won the silver with a score of 219.

The 54-hole team championship is a qualifying tournament for the Junior Golf World Cup, which will be held June 14-18 in Japan. India and Thailand qualified for the 12-team world meet.
