NeSmith, Talbert win Sea Pines Junior Heritage
Matthew NeSmith and McKenzie Talbert – both from North Augusta, S.C., – notched wins Feb. 6 at the Sea Pines Junior Heritage at Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head, S.C.
NeSmith, who has committed to South Carolina for fall 2012, entered the final round in a tie with South Florida signee Trey Valentine. Both players posted a 4-under 68 during the opening round at the resort’s Ocean Course to take an early lead. NeSmith pulled away during Round 2 at Harbor Town Golf Links, his favorite of the two venues, shooting an even-par 71 for a 4-under 139 and a three-shot victory over Valentine.
NeSmith, who is ranked No. 68 in Golfweek’s Junior Rankings, recently logged a runner-up finish at the Jones Cup Junior, played at Sea Island (Ga.) Golf Club. Had he won that tournament, he would have earned an exemption into the Jones Cup, played Feb. 4-6 in Sea Island.
In the girls’ division, Talbert, 15, trailed Monifa Sealy by two shots after the first round. A final-round 81 dropped Sealy down the leaderboard as Talbert birdied the final two par 3s on her way to a final-round 74. Her 3-over 146 resulted in a one-shot victory over Annie Park and Sierra Sims.
Talbert is No. 26 in Golfweek’s rankings.
