Toy Box notes: Points sticks with favorites
D.A. Points provided the most recent example of a winner sticking with old favorites.
In his Pebble Beach victory, Points used Ping i5 irons (4-PW) that were introduced in 2005. The grooves on the original i5 irons are no longer conforming, so Ping cast a new set of i5 heads and cut conforming grooves into their faces.
The i5 irons were designed as much for average golfers as they were for touring pros, but Points has stuck with them. This year Points has played four tournaments and 17 rounds (the Hope was five rounds) and is a staggering 55 under par.
He should thank his putter, as well. Following the late Payne Stewart and Zach Johnson, Points is using the original SeeMore FGP putter. At Pebble Beach, he finished first in putts per GIR (1.6 average) and tied for second in total putts (27.0 average). The SeeMore FGP can be purchased at retail for $150.
Points carried two Ping Tour-W wedges (52 and 58 degrees), giving Ping its fourth iron-and-wedge victory in six PGA Tour events this year. The others: Mark Wilson (two wins) and Bubba Watson.
Also in Points’ bag: TaylorMade R9 SuperTri driver (9.5 degree); TaylorMade Burner 3-wood (13 degree); TaylorMade R11 Rescue (18 degree); Ping G10 hybrid (21 degree) and a Titleist Pro V1x ball. Points wore FootJoy SYNR-G golf shoes and used a FootJoy SciFlex glove.

Callaway driver hot in Europe: The new Callaway Razr Hawk driver has notched two wins in a row (Thomas Bjorn and Alvaro Quiros) on the European Tour.
Quiros, using a 9.5 degree driver, is averaging 317.5 yards this year. The big guy can putt, too: Using a new Odyssey Black Series i No. 1 putter, he was fourth in putts per GIR (1.642) and sixth in putts per round (27.6).

Short shots: Alex Cejka asked Callaway clubmakers for a Diablo Edge 5-wood to test before Pebble Beach. He quickly put it in his bag. In Thursday’s opening round at Monterey Peninsula Country Club, Cejka used the club to record a double eagle, holing his second shot on the par-5 10th. . . . Phil Mickelson added a Callaway Diablo Edge 3-iron to his bag. . . . Sean O’Hair switched to TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB forged irons. . . . Jim Furyk, who has become a certified putter changer, debuted a TaylorMade Ghost TM 100 Tour putter. . . . Paul Goydos put TaylorMade’s Burner 2.0 irons in play. . . . The top eight and 12 of the top 13 finishers at Pebble Beach used Titleist golf balls.
