Thanks to eight second-round birdies, Jordan Spieth erased a five-shot deficit and is tied for the lead entering the final round of the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods.

Spieth finished with 66 Sunday and is tied with Cody Proveaux for the lead at 8 under, six shots ahead of Shun Yat Hak. Spieth, Golfweek’s second-ranked junior, is playing in his final AJGA event.

“I knew Cody wasn’t going to stop hitting great shots judging from the way he played yesterday, so I just needed to get out early and firing,” Spieth said.

Spieth’s tournament started out with a hiccup on Saturday, as he made double bogey on the par-5 second hole. That was not the case Sunday, as he birdied four of his first eight.

“Yesterday I don’t think I was focused enough to start,” the 2009 U.S. Junior champion said. “I want to say I was kind of laughing the first few holes, just having a good time, which is really important, but it’s one thing to laugh in between shots but it’s another to do it over your shots. Today I tried to stay more focused on every single shot.”

Proveaux, winner of last year’s Polo Junior Classic, made six birdies Sunday, but stumbled with five bogeys to shoot 71.

“I had a five-shot lead, a little cushion, and I knew I was playing with one of the best players in the world in Jordan Spieth,” Proveaux said. “It was a lot fun because you can make a lot of birdies feeding off each other because you’re making birdies back and forth. I figured out that if I make birdie on him (Spieth), he’s going to make birdie back on me, so I’ve got to make a lot of them.”

Hak shot 2-under 70 to move into solo third place, while Wyndham Clark shot 72 and sits in fourth.
