To many golf fans, this marks the start of the 2011 PGA Tour season. Tiger Woods, who slipped to No. 3 in the World Ranking, makes his season debut this week at Torrey Pines, where he has won seven times as a pro, including a memorable U.S. Open triumph in 2008. Also in the field is Phil Mickelson, who last week began his 2011 campaign in Abu Dhabi. It’s one of the best fields of the season, and it’s contested on a major-championship venue. Here’s who our experts like this week in the Farmers Insurance Open:

Rank Winner Wild Card
Babineau Tiger Woods

Yeah, we know, he plummeted “all the way” to No. 3 in the World Ranking, but he’s not quite ready to be filed under “Chopped Liver.” If there are horses for courses, he’s Secretariat at Torrey Pines.

Davis Love III

Guy wants to have a big year, and coming off a cool week in Chicago, where he was named Ryder Cup captain, he’s walking on a little bit of air these days.

Rude Charles Howell III

Has played well at Torrey Pines, including last year when he tied for ninth. And he flashed some form last week at the Bob Hope, where he tied for 13th.

Charley Hoffman

Hasn’t fired yet this year, but he’s a hometown boy who had a terrific finishing kick last year.

Martin Bill Haas

He’s finished first or second in three of his past six PGA Tour starts, and started 2011 with two consecutive top 10s.

Rickie Fowler

Fowler made the cut as an amateur at the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, and finished fifth at last year’s Farmers. He also had three top 5s in five Fall Series starts, and didn’t finish worse than 25th.

McCabe Dustin Johnson

San Diego in January feels a little like Pebble Beach in February, which is good news given that Johnson has won that tournament twice. In all the hoopla over Martin Kaymer, let’s remember how Johnson dusted him in last year’s Ryder Cup, so the talent is certainly there.

Charles Howell III

He’s made the cut in each of his eight starts in this tournament, finishing second twice and top 10 four times.

Miceli Dustin Johnson

With the Natalie Gulbis rumor behind him, you have to believe the long-hitting Johnson will have an advantage on both courses at Torrey Pines. The only question will be putting on the bumpy greens, but everyone will have that issue.

Steve Marino

Has shown early game in 2011, has the perfect game for Torrey Pines, and has a lot of rounds under his belt from playing in the past two events. He has to win sometime, so why not in San Diego?

Ringler Ben Crane

Defending a title on the PGA Tour is rare, and what’s even more rare is that I’m selecting the defending champion to repeat. Yes, Crane is a solid pick this week. He should be more comfortable being listed as one of the players to beat each week, and his form at Torrey Pines is favorable. In seven starts, Crane has four top-25 finishes.

Fredrik Jacobson

It wasn’t but just a couple of years ago when Jacobson’s name was mentioned quite often. He appears to be rounding back into that type of form. He started 2010 at No. 114 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, and is now closing in on the top 50, at No. 52. Jacobson has played well to start the year, with a T-27 at Sony Open and a T-33 last week at the Bob Hope.
