Fairmont, Bacardi team up for par-3 event
Tuesday, January 25, 2011
A lot of tournament announcement flow into my inbox, and most of them aren’t given a second thought. But one caught my attention because it combines one of my favorite destinations – Bermuda – with a great brand, Bacardi.
The Fairmont Southampton and Bacardi International will host the second annual Bacardi National Par-3 Championship, a 36-hole tournament played March 26-27. The hotel’s Ted Robinson-designed course is an 18-hole par-3 layout that requires players to use virtually every club off the tees, possibly including driver if the wind kicks up.
The tournament is sanctioned by the Bermuda Golf Association and the PGA of Bermuda. A pro-am will be played March 25.
The entry fee is $225 for professionals and $175 for amateurs, with proceeds benefiting the Bermuda Red Cross. Fees include a practice round, 36-hole tournament, lunch and a welcome gift. The deadline for entry is March 1.
Accommodations at the Fairmont Southampton start at $179 per night. To register for the tournament, email email@example.com or call 441-239-6952.
Here’s some other resort news:
Kiawah Island, S.C. – Want to test your game under major championship course conditions? From Aug. 1-7, Kiawah Island Golf Resort will set up its Ocean Course to the same playing conditions as Tour players will find during the 2012 PGA Championship. That includes the same length – 7,606 yards – the same rough lines and rough length, and the same green speeds.
Kiawah will conduct a low-net competition throughout that week. The winner will receive a two-night stay at The Sanctuary, the resort’s AAA Five Diamond hotel, for a foursome, along with two rounds of golf. Players must present a certified USGA handicap and play the course with a caddy to verify their scores. If there is a tie, the winner will be determined by a matching of scorecards.

Carlsbad, Calif. – La Costa Resort and Spa is renovating all 18 holes on its North Course and four holes on its South Course. The work is being done by Pascuzzo & Pate Golf Course Design.
All of the North’s greens will be replaced and all bunkers will be renovated. Thirty acres of turf will be eliminated to conserve water, 419 Bermuda will be planted in the fairways, Paspalum turf will be used in the rough and native areas, and greens will be Bentgrass.
The work will be done in three phases. Nine holes on the North will be renovated beginning in February. When that work is done, the remaining nine North holes will be done, followed by four holes on the South. Aspen Construction, the contractor that recently renovated The Greenbrier’s Old White Course in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., will do the work. La Costa will be Aspen’s first job on the West Coast.
The La Costa renovations are scheduled to be completed by November.
