Casey wins inaugural Volvo Champions

Paul Casey pumps a fist at the Volvo Champions.

RIFFA, Bahrain – England’s Paul Casey sank a 5-foot par putt at the last hole to win the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions for his first title in 20 months.

Casey needed the putt at No. 18 at the Royal Golf Club Sunday to secure the victory after playing partner and co-leader Peter Hanson of Sweden missed an up-and-down from the greenside bunker.

“It was just Peter and I coming down the last,” Casey said. “He opened the door slightly and I still had a very difficult up-and-down. I’m just happy I had that opportunity and I took it.”

The Englishman closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 20-under 268, while Hanson fell into a tie for second with Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, who earlier had made a birdie at the last to finish at 269.

Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher was another stroke back in fourth after a 67, and Sweden’s Robert Karlsson, last year’s Dubai World Championship winner, was alone in fifth at 17-under after a 66.

Casey was relieved to end his victory drought, which also included a six-month period when he was injured.

“I’ve played some very, very good golf the latter half of last year, and I was disappointed not to win,” he said. “I just wanted to put that right as soon as possible.”

Hanson was disappointed by a run of bad luck on the last hole.

“I was a bit upset with the lie on the last one really bad lie in the rough there off the tee and then in the bunker where someone didn’t rake it properly and it was sitting in a footprint.

“Tough day when you catch a couple of bad breaks. What can you do? It was just one of those days,” he said.

Top-ranked Asian Seung-Yul Noh of South Korea was tied for sixth with first-round leader Johan Edfors of Sweden at 16-under 272. Noh shot a final-day 66, while Edfors, who parred every hole on the back nine, came home in 69.
