Kang, Chen to battle for North and South title
A pair of USGA champions will face off in the finals of the Women’s North and South Amateur Saturday, as reigning U.S. Women’s Amateur champ Danielle Kang will take on reigning (for now) U.S. Girls’ Junior champ Doris Chen at Pinehurst. The U.S. Girls’ Junior also wraps up Saturday at Olympia Fields.
Kang, who just completed her sophomore season at Pepperdine, defeated another USGA champion, Meghan Stasi, and USC’s Lisa McCloskey in Friday’s quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Kang disposed of Stasi, the reigning U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champ, 2 and 1, and downed McCloskey 4 and 2.
Kang won her amateur title at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club. She qualified for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Open at the age of 14 and was one of only six amateurs to make the cut at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open.
On the other side of the bracket, Chen, who won the Girls’ Junior at the Country Club of North Carolina last year, defeated Daytona State standout Mitsuki Katahira 2 up in the quarterfinals. She went on to defeat Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex, 3 and 2.
Kang and Chen will tee off in the 36-hole finale at 8 a.m. Saturday.
